The laboratory
The laboratory is situated in the basement and sub-basement of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Building at Caltech.
It comprises three main sections: the Tipper Taylor Hutch and two mechanical testing facilities.

The Tipper Taylor Hutch is a 50-foot-long X-ray experimental hutch equipped with a Metaljet F1016 X-ray source. This high-performance source delivers X-rays with energies up to 160 keV and a maximum power output of 1.6 kW. Positioned at the center of the hutch, the Metaljet source is capable of emitting X-rays bi-directionally, enabling experiments on both sides of the hutch. The system is engineered for versatile X-ray applications, with two primary operational modes: Conical beam mode for tomography studies Collimated pencil beam mode for diffraction experiments This dual-mode functionality makes the Tipper Taylor Hutch a flexible and powerful tool for a wide range of advanced imaging and analytical applications.
